Behind Blue Eyes

Pete Townshend kindly granted permission for me to use his lyrics. Although the song has a long recording history, when I started the Hail the Queen saga I knew immediately that this was Helen of Troy’s song. She’s blamed personally by Homer for a 10-year war, the death of thousands of soldiers, and the destruction of a civilization. This song is the call to arms of the saga—for her to return to earth and clear her name. Having been a Spartan (Greek) woman before, she returns as a mixed race teenager with piercing blue eyes.
The Within Temptation cover of Behind Blue Eyes, powerfully performed by Sharon den Adel, feminizes the gender, and that is the version I use.

No one knows what it’s like
To be the bad girl
To be the sad girl
Behind blue eyes.
And no one knows what it’s like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies.
But my dreams
They aren’t as empty
As my conscience seems to be…
