THE FIRST WOMAN IN SPACE

From Book 1, chapter 7.1
The character Valentina Starikova, a general in the KGB, and Blanka’s cousin, is based on the real-life cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova who was the first woman ever in space – in the spaceship Vostok 6.

For Audiobook listeners.

Rare fact. Valentina designed and handmade the world’s first space mission patch. Although it depicts a dove, Valentina’s chosen call sign for the Vostok 6 mission was “Seagull.”

The saga uses the symbolism of birds widely, and some characters and titles are named after them, for example Sokol (Falcon), and Book 4, Operation Sparrow.

History Patch text reads:
HISTORY PATCH #1: 1963 A.D.
Valentina went where no man had gone before.

No astronaut wore a Mission Patch until Valentina.
She designed and handmade the first, orbited the planet Earth 48 times (bearing the olive branch of peace), and stayed in space longer than the total of all previous (male) U.S. astronauts added together.
